About the Legend

Gurudevi Sunil Santha (1915–1981) was a trailblazing Sri Lankan composer, vocalist, and cultural icon who gave Sinhala music its authentic soul. As the first Sri Lankan to top the prestigious Bhatkhande Music University in India, he returned with deep knowledge of Eastern and Western music but chose a different path. Rather than follow trends, he crafted a unique Sri Lankan musical identity rooted in folk melodies, Sigiri poetry, and Buddhist tradition. He recorded timeless songs like Olu Pipila and Handapana, mentored legends such as Amaradeva and Victor Rathnayake, and stood fearlessly for originality over conformity. This website is a tribute to his enduring legacy offering his music, story, rare recordings, and the movement he sparked to preserve the true spirit of Sinhala music.
